The concept for Lilly's Project came from our rescued cat, Lillith, who suddenly became very ill. The sudden surgery she needed to survive was very expensive. Although we were able to scrape up the funds, we wondered what would happen in a case where the money just wasn't there. The thought of having to choose between financial obligations and the welfare of pets was unthinkable, and so the decision to work towards helping others who might be in similar need was made.
Lilly's Project of Lee County, Inc. has been granted 501 (c) (3) status by the IRS effective September 4, 2008. This means that we now will raise money to assist not only our long-time partner Gulf Coast Humane Society (a long-standing private non-profit 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization in Fort Myers, Florida) but also other selected veternarians and clinics in Lee County. Our simple goal remains to work with these providers in assisting loving pet owners in need to feed and medically care for their pets. We feel strongly that any pet that can be kept with a loving owner is one less pet that will need to be sheltered, one less pet that will suddenly find itself separated from its human. . .
. . .and one less pet owner who must turn around and go back to a home now empty of a wagging tail or a comforting purr.
